How saxagliptin and metformin work
- Saxagliptin is an inhibitor of DPP-4, an enzyme that degrades incretin hormones including glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).
- Incretin helps the body produce more insulin only when it is needed and reduces the amount of glucose produced by the liver
- Metformin reduces blood glucose levels by decreasing glucose production in the liver
- Metformin reduces intestinal absorption of glucose
- Metformin increases insulin sensitivity resulting in increased glucose uptake and utilization
