Alfacort belongs to a group of medicines called topical corticosteroids that can be used to treat various skin conditions including:
- Eczema
- Dermatitis, including plicae (irritation between folds of skin) reactions to insect bites
- Otitis externa (otitis externa)
- Prurigo nodularis - a long-term skin condition in which very itchy lumps appear
- Neurodermatology – a long-term skin condition in which itchy skin becomes thickened due to scratching of the diaper rash, (if no infection is present, or existing infection is treated with appropriate antibiotics)
Instructions for use:
- Always use Alfacort exactly as your doctor has told you to.
- Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
The recommended dose is:
- Adults—Gently apply a thin layer of cream or ointment to the affected area(s) two or three times a day.
- Children and infants—Gently apply a thin layer of cream or ointment to the affected area(s) two or three times a day.
- The smaller the child, the less need to use it.
- A child's course should usually not last longer than 7 days - unless your doctor tells you to use it for longer
Warnings and precautions:
- Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you start using this medicine if you:
- You have psoriasis. The condition may worsen after stopping long-term treatment
- You will apply Alfacort to your face, especially around the eyes.
- This medicine should not be used for a long time on the face because it may harm the facial skin
- Alfacort will be used to treat skin inflammation or diaper rash in children and infants. Treatment in infants should be limited to a maximum of seven days.
- It's possible that accidentally using too much cream or ointment could end up with a skin infection. If the condition seems to be getting worse despite the use of prescribed antibiotics, stop using Alfacort and contact your doctor.
