Selinda Drospirenone 4 mg 28 Tablets Drospirenone Progesterone Only Pills The progesterone-only pill ("POP" or "mini-pill") is recommended for women who cannot use pills containing estrogen, for example. People with migraines with aura, a history of blood clots, and overweight women who smoke.

This article details information about progesterone-only birth control pills, not levonorgestrel or norethisterone progesterone-only pills.

Progesterone monopills (Slenda) work differently than older POPs and usually give a more tolerable bleeding pattern.

It works in a similar way to the combined oral contraceptive pill by inhibiting ovulation as well as thickening cervical mucus and thinning the uterine lining.

Its effectiveness in preventing pregnancy is 99% (with ideal pill use), 91% with typical pill use, and there is a larger window of opportunity to remember missed pills than with older POPs (24 hours instead of 3 hours).

Because Slenda does not contain estrogen, it can be used more reliably in women who cannot tolerate estrogen, or for whom estrogen is too dangerous.

A box of drospirenone (Slenda) tablets contains 24 white hormone tablets and 4 green inactive placebo tablets. It is available by private prescription only as it is not currently shown on PBS.
