Dextrose saline 5%, sodium chloride 9% - 500 ml
Why dextrose and sodium chloride injection are used:
- Dextrose and sodium chloride injection are used as a source of water, electrolytes, and calories.
Do not use dextrose and sodium chloride injections:
- Do not use solutions containing dextrose in patients with a known allergy to corn or corn products.
Warnings and precautions:
- Dextrose and sodium chloride injection should be used with extreme caution, if at all, in patients with congestive heart failure, severe renal failure, and in clinical cases in which edema with sodium retention is present.
- Dextrose injection with low electrolyte concentrations should not be given simultaneously with blood through the same administration set due to the possibility of pseudoagglutination or hemolysis.
- Intravenous administration of dextrose and sodium chloride can cause fluid and/or solute overload resulting in diluted serum electrolyte concentrations, fluid overload, congestive states, or pulmonary edema.
- Excessive administration of dextrose and sodium chloride injection may cause significant hypokalemia.
- In patients with impaired renal function, administration of dextrose and sodium chloride injection may result in sodium retention.
- Clinical evaluation and periodic laboratory determinations are necessary to monitor changes in fluid balance, electrolyte concentrations, and acid-base balance during prolonged parenteral therapy or when the patient's condition requires such evaluation.
- Caution should be exercised when administering dextrose and sodium chloride injection, to patients receiving corticosteroids or corticotropin.
- Dextrose and sodium chloride injection should be used with caution in patients with overt or subclinical diabetes mellitus.
Possible side effects:
- Stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention if you experience tightness in the throat, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue, feel faint, or have difficulty breathing.
- Stop using the product if you experience hives or itching of the face or body.
Other medicines and dextrose and sodium chloride injections:
- Additives may be incompatible. Consult with pharmacist, if available. When introducing additives, use aseptic technique, mix well and do not store.
How to use dextrose and sodium chloride injection:
- As directed by the doctor. Dosage is based on the age, weight, and clinical condition of the patient as well as laboratory determinations.
- Parenteral drug products should be visually inspected for particles and discoloration prior to administration whenever solution and container permit.
- As reported in the literature, the dose and fixed rate of intravenous dextrose infusion should be chosen with caution in pediatric patients, especially neonates and low-weight infants, due to the increased risk of hyperglycemia/hypoglycemia.
How to store dextrose and sodium chloride injection:
- Exposure of pharmaceutical products to heat should be minimized. Avoid excessive heat
- Protects from freezing. Store at a temperature of 20-25 degrees Celsius.
